Cosmic Ray Composition around the Knee from Eas Electromagnetic and Muon Data

چکیده
The EAS-TOP and MACRO Collaboration * We report the analysis of the N e-N µ coincident events collected by the MACRO/EAS-TOP collaboration at the Gran Sasso Laboratories. The result points to a primary composition becoming heavier around the knee of the primary spectrum (in the energy region 10 15 − 10 16 eV). The result is in very good agreement with the measurements of EAS-TOP alone at the surface, wich detects muons with energy E µ > 1 GeV and uses the same (QGSJET) interaction model.

The primary energy spectrum of cosmic rays obtained by muon density measurements at KASCADE
Spectra of local muon densities in high-energy extensive air-showers (EAS) are presented as signature of the primary cosmic ray energy spectrum in the knee region. The KASCADE central detector, with its two layers of multiwire proportional chambers and with a layer of scintillation counters, enables the measurements of muon densities at two different threshold energies. The spectra have been re...
متن کاملMuon content of ultra-high-energy air showers: Yakutsk data versus simulations
We analyse a sample of 33 extensive air showers (EAS) with estimated primary energies above 2·1019 eV and high-quality muon data recorded by the Yakutsk EAS array. We compare, event-by-event, the observed muon density to that expected from CORSIKA simulations for primary protons and iron, using SIBYLL and EPOS hadronic interaction models. The study suggests the presence of two distinct hadronic...
متن کاملKASCADE extensive air shower experiment
The main aim of the KASCADE extensive air shower (EAS) experiment is the determination of the chemical composition of cosmic rays in the energy range around and above the knee at Ek ≈ 3 PeV. A large number of observables is measured simultaneously for each individual event, by the combination of various detection techniques for the electromagnetic, the muonic, and the hadronic component of the ...
متن کاملHe 2.1.1 the Status of the Extensive Air Shower Experiment Kascade
The extensive air shower (EAS) experiment KASCADE has been installed at the laboratory site of the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe. It consists of an extended array of electron detectors and muon detectors as well as of a compact and complex central detector system. The latter contains a scintillator matrix, muon detectors, and a large hadron calorimeter. The main aim of the KASCADE project is the ...
متن کاملA Non-Parametric Approach to Infer the Energy Spectrum and the Mass Composition of Cosmic Rays
The experiment KASCADE observes simultaneously the electron-photon, muon, and hadron components of high-energy extensive air showers (EAS). The analysis of EAS observables for an estimate of energy and mass of the primary particle invokes extensive Monte Carlo simulations of the EAS development for preparing reference patterns. The present studies utilize the air shower simulation code CORSIKA ...
